Welcome
Introduction
Way back in 1983 I made the decision to build
my own car. At that time and for many years to come it was only a
dream. Having modified many cars since then and even being given the
title, "Boy Racer", has not stopped me from following my
teenage dream to build and drive a car constructed by yours truly. I
have no formal technical training in engineering or mechanics. I
learnt from a manual when money, or rather the lack of it dictated
that dealer servicing and repairs were beyond my budget. I have
progressed from there until lastly producing a 300bhp Turbo charged
Astra with a 6 speed gearbox. Now for the ultimate challenge. Why
modify someone else's car? Build your own.
Why a Tiger Avon?
I first started showing an
interest in kit cars whilst I was a teenager. Since that time I have
watched many cars and manufacturers come and go. The two designs
that have stayed the test of time have been the Lotus 7 and Cobra
replicas This is where I started my search. I collected literature,
visited shows and lastly visited manufacturers. I narrowed it to
three. Pilgrim Sumo, Sylva Striker and Tiger. As a first time
builder and on a budget the Pilgrim was ruled out. From my remaining
choice the people at Tiger were the most helpful. When I visited I
was impressed with the friendly family set-up. But which Tiger to
choose? I was taken for a very cold windy blast down the Fenland
roads by Paul from Tiger in the Avon and after a welcoming coffee to
warm me the decision was made. An order was placed with Sue and a
collection date for my chassis of 8/2/03.The Tiger Avon is designed
to use donor parts mainly from the Ford Sierra. Front hubs from a
Ford Cortina and an Escort steering rack. With the top wishbones
ball joints from a Ford Transit van and the lower ball joints from a
Fiat 124. I chose to use a Ford Pinto engine as my power unit but
other engines can be used including Ford Zetec, Rover K series, V8's
and motorcycle engines.
